COFFEE REVIEWS

We are on a mission to sip, taste and review the UK’s best coffees.

Bohemia Roasts

Bohemia Roasts St Neots

Bohemia Roasts is the first coffee roastery based in St Neots, Cambridgeshire.

Their coffee is roasted in small batches to ensure the highest quality.

Opening their doors in 2019, Bohemia Roasts supply many of the local cafes and restaurants.

The coffees that they showcase are all sustainably sourced from around the world, at the time of writing their menu consisted of 4 single origins, 2 blends and a decaf, two of which were organic.

If you’re local to St Neots and fancy learning a few barista tricks they also offer a barista course which involves learning how to pull the perfect espresso and pouring latte art.

Questions With The Roaster

What inspired you to start roasting coffee and how did it all begin?

After successfully opening Bohemia Restaurant in 2016 we wanted to find a way to serve the freshest, highest quality coffee that customers could also take home with them; and so Bohemia Roasts was born. As great feedback from customers started to roll in we have continued to grow, and our coffee is now served in a number of cafes, restaurants and even private members clubs across the UK.

Bohemia Roasters St Neots

What sets Bohemia Roasts apart from the rest?

Our roastery is set in the heart of St Neots and doubles up as a retail store, where our customers can see, smell and experience our coffee from bean to cup.  We like to keep things personal offering expert advise, recommendations to our customers, in person or online. We are more than just a roastery and have expanded our offering to retail, wholesale, private label, barista training and much more.

We sip and slurp coffee from all over the world. Discover which of these were our teams favourite.

How have the people of St Neots taken to a coffee roaster in town?

Very well! We have become a well known name in the community, bringing people together over a cup of the good stuff across multiple venues, as well as in their homes. We’re the only roastery in St Neots, so many locals love having great, freshly roasted coffee on their doorstep.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced so far?

Scaling up without losing our character. We pride ourselves on our artisan, small batch roasting methods which is something we don’t want to lose. It is of course great to see our brand grow and develop, but we aim to keep our hand-roasted, locally produced charm.

What does the future have in store for Bohemia Roasts?

We’re really looking forward to setting up our own multifaceted subscription service across our coffees, syrups & hot chocolates. We currently offer repeat delivery, but as we grow we look forward to offering a more developed subscription service that provides even more for our customers.

The Origin

The Maya coffee from Bohemia comes from the Quetzaltepeque & Chiquimula region of Guatemala.

Guatemala is a coffee producing country that is close to my heart after spending a couple of months there in 2018 visiting various coffee farms.

Guatemala Coffee Farm

Guatemala has an iconic postcard worthy landscape that attracts folk from all over the world.

It just so happens that the very things that make Guatemala so unique, the volcanoes also play a huge role in providing rich and nutritious land for coffee to grow.

Coffee has been growing in Guatemala since the 1850’s and was always one of main exports for the Guatemalan economy.

Right up until the early twenty first century coffee was one of the main economic players in Guatemala. Unfortunately since the coffee crisis in 2001 and many farmers now choosing to farm other more profitable crops, coffee has been on the decline.

One of the great things about coffee production in Guatemala is the fact that many of the farms have their own wet stations so they are able to process their own coffee meaning that many of the coffees leaving the country are traceable right back to the farm.

Guatemalan coffee’s are highly regarded in the specialty coffee world because of the range of different flavours that can be found.

The taste profiles can span all the way from light floral or citrus tones all the way through to deeper full bodied chocolatier notes.

The Review

The Organic Maya from Bohemia starts with a smooth chocolatey fragrance as soon as the bag is opened. It is roasted on the darker side of medium to accentuate the rich flavour profile this coffee holds.

The brewing coffee has a few smokey notes that layer together with the chocolatey flavours, giving me a good idea of what was lined up in the cup.

Scores Bohemia Roasts

The first few sips are warming and extremely smooth. There is no bitterness with this one and the smokey aromas don’t carry into the brew.

Sweet sugary notes dominate the middle of the sip and carry into a brief aftertaste.

The body is actually fairly light but carries the heavier flavours really well.

As the coffee cools an undertone of cacao unifies with the sugary sweetness and evolves into milk chocolate.

A great coffee that is pretty versatile across all brew methods. Paper filters really highlight the sweet sugary nature of this coffee while my stovetop produced a smooth milk chocolatey cup.
