The Roaster

We are Here Coffee is a roaster based in Margate with a back story that is almost as interesting as their concept.

To start off with the brand is bold and bright and has some really cool creative aspects - my personal favourite is one of their taglines, ‘don’t be a dick’ which I think should be a motto that everyone lives by.

We Are Here coffee started off as a coffee cart inside a three-wheeler Piaggio that graced the streets of the UK and served high-quality espresso coffee in Margate. Unfortunately, the Piaggio, Fred was stolen one evening right off the street (the CCTV footage of the people stealing is actually on their Instagram for you to see).

However, after a short amount of time regrouping, We Are Here reemerged back into the coffee scene, this time as a coffee roaster.

Their concert is definitely different from many of the other third-wave coffee roasters out there at the moment. They put it best themselves

“to state the obvious WE LOVE COFFEE, like loads. but we're bored with all the doo-dars and chit-chat that comes with it why over-complicate a drink that you make when you're sleepy? it makes no sense.”

So they only have four coffees on the menu (sometimes 5 as a special) that have the names; This One, That One and The Other One and Decaf. Each coffee is selected at a green coffee level and roasted to how you like your coffee and how you make it.

There is no description or details on the bag, other than a few descriptive ideas of how you like your coffee whether it’s laid back, juicy or strong.

A really great idea on how people drink their coffee, it kind of focuses on the primary reason for drinking coffee (the taste) and takes away any rambling and suggestions that may influence what you should taste.

It’s a concept that I love and I do think it’s important to let people try and experience the coffee first without giving the game away and putting watermelon in their heads before they have even opened the bag.

They’re also a good bunch, 10p from every bag goes towards one of two charities that they support.

The Coffee

This part of the post almost feels a little bit against what We Are Here are about however I’ll try my best to cut the overcomplicated chit chat.

‘That One’ Coffee originates from Fazenda Inhame, Brazil located in the Campos Altos, Cerrado Mineiro.

The farm is a small family-run operation that is located on around 28 hectares of land.

They use a selective mechanical method to pick the coffee so that the unripe coffee cherries stay on the tree.

The harvesting of the coffee in Brazil is slightly different from many other coffee-growing countries, in that there are many mechanical methods to pick the coffee.

Taking up over a third of the global coffee production, Brazil is a coffee powerhouse and the number one exporter of coffee in the world.

There are coffee farms in Brazil that produce more coffee than certain countries, with that there is a need for something other than the manpower, that the majority of coffee harvests are fuelled on.

Coffee picking machinery range from a sort of shake and collect method that strips whole coffee trees and harvests all of the coffee cherries whether they are ready to be picked or not, through to cutting edge coffee picking technology where machines selectively pick the ripe cherries.

Although coffee harvesting machines aren’t as efficient in terms of the coffee yield of each tree to manually picking coffee, they have enabled Brazil to produce huge volumes of coffee over the last few years.

The Review

The unground fragrance is that of a full-bodied coffee. It has some suggestions of milk chocolate and nuts but does have an undertone of fermented fruit that is typical of naturals.

The brewing coffee evolves from the rich chocolatey notes in the fragrance and aromas of sweeter flavours emerge from the cup.

The first tastes are smooth and sweet. No overly distinct flavours in the coffee that jump out straight away but really enjoyable and easy to drink.

As the coffee cools the same enjoyable profile carries through, delicate notes of pear layer together and twist into a nutty aftertaste.

The mouthfeel is smooth and fairly light to start off with but leaves on a sort of buttery note.

The coffee is a textbook easy sipper. It was super enjoyable to drink without having any big bold flavours, a coffee that works with all methods. Marketed perfectly by We are here coffee as a likeable, laidback and a social drink.

I’d recommend cupping this one and seeing if you can identify any other flavours.
