How to store ground coffee?

Ground coffee should be stored in an airtight container as soon as the coffee is ground.

If you buy your coffee preground be sure to reseal the bag once the coffee has been opened.

If the bag does not have a resealable lock, store in a jar or another vacuum coffee container.

Ground Coffee Jar storage

Store your ground coffee in a dark cupboard or a cool darkened room. Coffee shouldn’t be kept in the fridge, this will have a significant impact on the overall taste of the coffee.

Freezing the coffee is also slightly unadvisable. If you have a deep freezer then vacuum packing it and sticking it at the bottom of a deep freeze will maintain the coffees flavours.

However in a regular freezer in a bag will initially draw moisture out of the coffee when freezing and reabsorb back when defrosting creating a dull and flat tasting coffee.

How to make ground coffee?

Ground coffee starts off as whole beans that have been roasted according to the particular raw coffee bean and the desired flavour profile the coffee roasted wishes to achieve.

To make a cup of coffee the whole beans need to become ground. This is done using a coffee grinder.

Coffee grinders range from small handheld grinders that are manually twisted to make small quantities of  ground coffee right up to larger industrial machines that can create large quantities of ground coffee.

In speciality coffee whole beans are passed through a chamber and onto a set of burrs (usually either steal or ceramic). The top burr usually rotates crushing the coffee beans.

The distance between each burr is proportional to the size of the coffee grounds referred to the coarseness of coffee. Depending on your brew method the coffee grounds will need to be a specific size.

Larger more coarse coffee is used for methods such as percolaters, cafetieres/french presses, cold brews and certain pour over methods. Medium ground coffee is typically used for Aeropress, Stovetop and certain Pour overs. Fine ground coffee is used in espresso machines and Turkish coffee pot.

Grinding coffee is different for each coffee filter method check out our guides if you’d like to learn how to make ground coffee in your filter method.

Otherwise, if you’re in the market for a coffee grinder see our article on the best electric burr grinders or the best manual burr grinders

How much ground coffee per cup?

Depending on the filter method that you use the amount will differ, as will the amount of water for example if you are using an espresso machine you will use around 17g-21g of ground coffee that yields around 40g of coffee, the ratio is roughly 1 part coffee to 2 parts water.

Whereas if you are using a French press you will use around 50g of ground coffee for 750g of water.

Find The Best Coffee Scales online.

Coffee Scales blog

The ratio is roughly 1 part coffee to 15 parts coffee. The perfect ratio of coffee to water depends on the brew method and size of ground alongside how long the ground coffee is immersed in the water.

However, broadly speaking if you were making a regular cup of black coffee the amount of coffee that has been used (whether you’ve made an espresso and topped it up with water or a 1 litre cafetiere and split it three ways) is around 17g to 21g.

If you haven’t got gram scales and you’ve just googled ‘how much ground coffee per cup?’ then the answer is just over a tablespoon per cup.

Best ground coffee UK?

There are many places to buy speciality ground coffee in the UK your independent coffee roasters will normally roast at least 2 or 3 different blends of single origins normally they will have the option of purchasing ground coffee for your chosen filter method.

Otherwise, why not take a look at Batch ground coffee subscriptions, we constantly rotate between the UK’s independent roasters and origins of coffee. We can also grind the coffee to fit your chosen brew method.

Difference between instant coffee and ground coffee?

Coffee whether it is instant or ground coffee starts off as green raw coffee beans. The green coffee is then roasted.

Roasted coffee is then passed through a grinder making ground coffee whereas instant coffee is made by either spray drying or freeze drying a coffee concentrate.

How Long Does Ground Coffee Last For?

Around 1 month.

Ground coffee is best consumed as soon as it is ground. So the longer that you have ground coffee the more that it decreases in quality. It still shouldn’t harm you though, but rather taste flat.

Most ground coffee subscriptions will have delivery frequencies of at the most 1 month.
